A proposed transfer of 2 million gallons of water per day from the Modesto Irrigation District (MID) to the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) is currently underway. Please help TRT encourage the SFPUC to drop these negotiations today.
Diverting more water from the Tuolumne could have negative effects on the Poopenaut Valley and other sections downstream of Hetch Hetchy.
The environmental impact report that initally studied the transfer used outdated data, and new environmental review should be conducted before any transfer is considered.
Demand projections are down and San Francisco does not need additional water in the foreseeable future, making the transfer unnecessary.
The SFPUC projected it would need additional water only once every 3 years (again based on outdated data), but they have to pay for it each year regardless of use. This makes the true cost a staggering $2,100 per acre foot, much more than other sources being considered.
Thank you for your support to stop this threat to the health and beauty of the Tuolumne River. For more information, please contact Peter Drekemeir, Bay Area Program Director, at peter@tuolumne.org or (415) 882-7252.
