State awards Modesto $2.2 million grant for regional park

State officials today announced a $2.2 million grant to Modesto for building the next phase of Tuolumne River Regional Park.
The money comes from Proposition 84, a statewide initiative approved by voters in 2006 to fund flood control, natural resource, park and conservation projects.
The California Natural Resources Agency gathered with local officials at Modesto’s Beard Brook Park to award $31 million for developing 31 river parkways in the state. The Modesto grant was the second largest, just below $2.5 million for Long Beach.

The Tuolumne River Trust hosted the Green on the Stream Festival at the Tuolumne River Regional Park on Saturday, May 22, 2010. The event celebrated the Tuolomne River with music, activism, and education. The event included children's activities, a bounce house, fly fishing demonstrations, an eco-carnival, wildlife, the Adamantine Belly Dancers, and performances by bands including A La Lune.
Modesto’s grant will pay for the next phase of the Tuolumne River parkway between the Seventh Street bridge and Highway 99. It will include 15 acres of expensive riverside restoration and an 800-foot trail for walkers and bicyclists.
