Tree Planting Volunteer Day: Rim Fire Footprint

Plant Trees With Us!

Rally for the River at SF City Hall

Rally for the River at SF City Hall

Join Tuolumne River Trust, Save California Salmon, Restore the Delta, Golden State Salmon Association, San Francisco Baykeeper, Delta Tribal Environmental Council, Sierra Club California, San Francisco League of Conservation Voters, and Great Old Broads for Wilderness during SF Climate Week, as we rally on the steps of San Francisco City Hall, followed by attendance at the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission meeting.

Earth Day Rally Agenda:
Tuesday, April 23

  • 12:00 pm: Gather on the SF City Hall steps (1 Dr. Carlton B. Goodlett Pl.)

    • Tunes by Loose Licks Jug Band

  • 12:15-12:45 pm: Rally on the SF City Hall Steps with speakers:

    • Peter Drekmeier, Policy Director of Tuolumne River Trust

    • Cintia Cortez, Policy Analyst with Restore the Delta & Delta Tribal Environmental Coalition Representative

    • Scott Artis, Executive Director of Golden State Salmon Association

    • Eric Buescher, Managing Attorney at San Francisco Baykeeper

  • 1:00 pm: Brown bag lunch in Civic Center Plaza (bring your own lunch)

  • 1:30 pm: SFPUC meeting in Room 400 of SF City Hall

As the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission prepares their annual budget for a Board of Supervisors vote in June, we invite you to stand with the river! Join our rally to send a powerful message: The people want sustainable water policies that protect the environment, frontline communities, tribes, commercial and recreational fishing communities, and ratepayers.

Low flows along the Tuolumne River contribute to the decline of salmon populations, destroy Indigenous lifeways, create toxic algae blooms, and disrupt the food chain and cycle of life in the SF Bay-Delta and beyond. Excessive water storage, skyrocketing water rates, and low river flows are not the answer. With taxpayer water rates poised to rise and river flows diminishing, we encourage SFPUC to take the next steps towards a more sustainable community, economy and river ecosystem.

Please register to attend!  We are looking for motivated citizens like you to join us.

A Special Invitation: The Journey to Save Wild Salmon with Tucker Malarkey & Peter Drekmeier

A Special Invitation: The Journey to Save Wild Salmon with Tucker Malarkey & Peter Drekmeier

Celebrate World Water Day with us at Barebottle Brewery for an inspiring conversation, between Tucker Malarkey, acclaimed author of Stronghold: One Man’s Quest to Save the World’s Wild Salmon, and Peter Drekmeier, the passionate Policy Director of the Tuolumne River Trust.

Event agenda:
6-7 pm: Book conversation
7-7:15 pm: Book signing
7:15 pm-8 pm: Drinks and mingling

Stronghold unfolds the compelling tale of Guido Rahr, one of the world’s greatest fly fishermen, and his crusade to protect the world’s last bastion of wild salmon. His journey spans from the verdant landscapes of Oregon and Alaska to the untouched salmon havens in the Russian Far East, confronting challenges from diverse quarters including scientists, conservationists, and even Russian oligarchs, in his quest to create a safe haven for these endangered species.

Closer to home, Peter Drekmeier champions the cause of salmon conservation in California, focusing on the vital ecosystems supported by the Tuolumne River. This river, originating from Yosemite and flowing through to the San Joaquin River, sustains not just 2.7 million Bay Area inhabitants but also myriad wildlife habitats, including those of the salmon.

As you sip on a pint of Hella Hetchy (brewed with Tuolumne River water!), immerse yourself in the narratives of Tucker and Peter. Their experiences in salmon restoration are not just stories but a call to action, inviting you to play a role in safeguarding this pivotal species from the brink of extinction.

Get your free signed copy of Stronghold

Limited quantities apply. Get your copy today! With a minimum donation, you will receive a free signed copy of Stronghold. Please select your book choice during registration and include a personal message or name for Tucker to inscribe.

Special Signed Hardcover - free with a minimum donation of $35

If you would like to purchase a book to get shipped to you ahead of the event we highly encourage you to purchase Tucker’s book from local bookstore, Kepler's.

This special event is part of Barebottle Brewery’s Craft for Cause program where a portion of every purchase of Hella Hetchy Yosemite Pilsner pints will go directly to TRT. Check out Barebottle's food menu here and feel free to bring additional snacks if desired.

This event is free and open to all. Please register and come early to grab a seat!

About Stronghold:

In the tradition of Mountains Beyond Mountains and The Orchid Thief, Stronghold is Tucker Malarkey’s eye-opening account of one of the world’s greatest fly fishermen and his crusade to protect the world’s last bastion of wild salmon. From a young age, Guido Rahr was a misfit among his family and classmates, preferring to spend his time in the natural world. When the salmon runs of the Pacific Northwest began to decline, Guido was one of the few who understood why. As dams, industry, and climate change degraded the homes of these magnificent fish, Rahr saw that the salmon of the Pacific Rim were destined to go the way of their Atlantic brethren: near extinction.

An improbable and inspiring story, Stronghold takes us on a wild adventure from Oregon to Alaska to one of the world’s last remaining salmon strongholds in the Russian Far East, a landscape of ecological richness and diversity that is rapidly being developed for oil, gas, minerals, and timber. Along the way, Rahr contends with scientists, conservationists, Russian oligarchs, corrupt officials, and unexpected allies in an attempt to secure a stronghold for the endangered salmon, an extraordinary keystone species whose demise would reverberate across the planet.

Tucker Malarkey, who joins Rahr in the Russian wilderness, has written a clarion call for a sustainable future, a remarkable work of natural history, and a riveting account of a species whose future is closely linked to our own.

About Tucker

Tucker Malarkey is the author of the critically acclaimed and national bestselling novels An Obvious Enchantment and Resurrection. With a career that began at the Washington Post, her love of human culture and wilderness have since taken her all over the world. She now lives with her son in Berkeley, California. Tucker grew up fly fishing, studied Sovietology, and has traveled to Russia numerous times. Stronghold is her first major work of nonfiction.

About Peter

Peter Drekmeier, Policy Director, joined the Trust in August 2007. Raised in Palo Alto on Hetch Hetchy water, Peter knows the Bay Area well. In 1990 he founded Bay Area Action (now Acterra), and has coordinated two international Earth Day campaigns. He has extensive experience working on land use initiatives. Peter is a whitewater rafting guide and a former mayor of Palo Alto.

Lunch Chat with Max Gomberg

Lunch Chat with Max Gomberg

Join us for an insightful conversation with former employee of the State Water Board, Max Gomberg.

Max Gomberg's resignation last year sparked controversy as he publicly criticized Governor Gavin Newsom's inaction on climate change and water resilience. Max pointed to the Governor’s dismissal of Water Board President Felicia Marcus after she led the adoption of Phase 1 of the Bay Delta Water Quality Control Plan as a primary reason for leaving the agency.

Regarding his colleagues at the Water Board, Max wrote: “The way some of you have simply rolled over and accepted this has also been difficult to watch.”

During this conversation, Max will share his unique insights into the inner workings of the State Water Board and the challenges he faced during his tenure. He'll shed light on the reasons behind his resignation and the difficulties he encountered in advocating for strategies to make California more water resilient.

We will also provide valuable advice to viewers on how to get involved and take action in upcoming state water board hearings. Don't miss this opportunity to gain an insider's perspective and learn how you can make a difference in shaping California's water future.

Our conversation will take place Tuesday, November 28th from 12-1pm PST. Register via the Zoom link below.

About Max
Max Gomberg is an environmental scientist who previously served as the Water Conservation and Climate Change Manager at the State Water Board. After serving 10 years Gomberg resigned last summer, criticizing Governor Gavin Newsom and his administration for their inaction on climate change and water resilience.

Trail Work Volunteer Day: Preston Falls Trail

Join us this fall for an outdoor trail maintenance volunteer day!

Preston Falls Trail is finally open and we are ready to get to work! For those of you who have joined us on Hamby or Indian Creek, Preston Falls is a respite from the strenuous switchbacks and change in elevation that you've grown accustomed to. We will have beautiful views of the Tuolumne decked out in fall colors while we brush back some vegetation that is crowding the trail. Because this trail was inaccessible for so long, there is a backlog of maintenance, so we are dedicating both of our November trail work days to this location!

Trail maintenance not only improves recreation user experience, but is vital to preventing harmful erosion in our watersheds! Great Sierra River Cleanup

Great Sierra River Cleanup

Get outdoors and help clean up our watershed!

The Tuolumne River Trust is hosting a river cleanup on Saturday, September 23rd along the North Fork Tuolumne River as part of the Great Sierra River Cleanup (GSRC).

GSRC is a Sierra-wide watershed cleanup event coordinated by Sierra Nevada Alliance in collaboration with California’s Coastal Cleanup Day. Last year, 249 volunteers removed 5,711 pieces of trash from 98 miles of Sierra Nevada waterways. We’re looking to expand our efforts to make an even greater impact. You can be part of the solution and volunteer to help remove litter and plastic pollution from our beloved Sierra Nevada watershed.

The Sierra produces a significant portion of California’s water supply and supplies the state with 50% of its hydroelectric energy. Our beloved Tuolumne is a large part of this system, supplying water to over 200,000 acres in the Central Valley and drinking water to over 2.7 million people in the Bay Area. Unfortunately, our waterways are impacted by waste and other pollutants making their way downstream, so we’re asking for your help in cleaning up our waterways!

History of Coastal Cleanup Day

The idea for a statewide cleanup was started by Oregon resident Judy Neilson in 1984. Judy organized the “Plague of Plastics” event in October of that year due to rising concerns over the amount of plastic debris along the coast. In 1985, California emulated those efforts and created the California Coastal Cleanup Day, led by the Coastal Cleanup Commission.

In 1993, California Coastal Cleanup Day was recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the “largest garbage collection” ever organized, with 50,405 volunteers. Since then, the reach of Coastal Cleanup Day has spread inland, as most of the marine debris that we find on our beaches actually starts as urban trash or street litter.

For more information on California Coastal Cleanup Day, visit the Coastal Cleanup Commission’s page.
