Great Gray Owl

Great gray owls nest in the middle elevations of the greater Yosemite ecosystem where the forests and meadows meet. They commonly forage in mountain meadows surrounded by conifer forests.
This owl is the largest of the the North American owls. It stands 2 feet tall with a 5-foot wingspan. It has distinctive piercing yellow eyes and a large facial disk.
Mostly small mammals like voles, weasels, gophers and mice.
Great grey owls play an important role in their environment by controlling these small animal populations.
Researchers estimate there are only about 200 to 300 individuals in California, and about 65% of the state's population resides in Yosemite.
The Great Gray Owl is rare and endangered. Their forest habitat is being destroyed by fires, logging and clearing.
