Great Gray Owl

Sub Species: Strix nebulosa Yosemitensis

  • Great gray owls nest in the middle elevations of the greater Yosemite ecosystem where the forests and meadows meet. They commonly forage in mountain meadows surrounded by conifer forests.

  • This owl is the largest of the the North American owls. It stands 2 feet tall with a 5-foot wingspan. It has distinctive piercing yellow eyes and a large facial disk.

  • Mostly small mammals like voles, weasels, gophers and mice.

  • Great grey owls play an important role in their environment by controlling these small animal populations.

  • Researchers estimate there are only about 200 to 300 individuals in California, and about 65% of the state's population resides in Yosemite.

  • The Great Gray Owl is rare and endangered. Their forest habitat is being destroyed by fires, logging and clearing.
