Adopt a North American Beaver

Sub Species: Castor Canadensis

  • The beaver has a specialized niche. It lives in rivers, ponds or small lakes and eats vegetation. The greater Yosemite ecosystem is one of the regions where beavers are still to be found, and in some numbers, is the extreme western end of the Yosemite section, along the lower courses of the Merced and Tuolumne rivers west of the foothills.

  • It is an excellent swimmer, with webbed hind feet and a broad, flat tail.

  • Beavers are herbivores and lignivores; they feed on the bark of trees and cambium - the inner layer, which is under the bark.

  • Native to California and considered a "keystone species”. They are ecosystem engineers helping to create and maintain diverse habitat throughout the State.

  • Beavers are the superheroes in fighting Climate Change by preventing the loss of biodiversity facing California. Research has shown that watersheds inhabited by beavers are wetter and greener, more resistant to wildfires and more productive for agriculture.

  • Habitat destruction and degradation especially channelization projects that affect rivers, lakes, and wetlands. Additionally, California authorities have issued permits to get rid of 3.000 beavers, often by killing them as they considered pests by government officials.
